How many paws does a cat have?

All cats have four paws, unless they suffer some kind of tragic accident. Each front paw has four fingers and one thumb, which is known as a dewclaw. Her back paws each have four toes. Every finger and toe also has a claw, similar to your fingernails.

How many paws does a cat have? A cat typically has 18 toes, or digits, on its paws:

  • Front paws: Five toes, including a dewclaw that doesn’t bear weight
  • Hind paws: Four toes

However, some cats have more toes than the typical 18:

  • Polydactyl catsHave more than the typical number of toes due to a genetic mutation. The term “polydactyl” comes from the Greek words for “many digits”. Polydactyl cats can have up to nine toes on each paw.
  • World record holderJake, a Canadian ginger tabby, holds the Guinness World Record for the most toes on a cat with seven toes on each paw, for a total of 28.

Polydactyl cats are healthy and normal in every way, except for their extra toes. These extra toes require frequent trimming to prevent injury.

If one parent is polydactyl and the other is normal, there’s a 40–50% chance that each kitten will be polydactyl.

How many paws does a cat have? How many toes do cats have? Are there any types of cats with more than 20 toes on each paw?

Do cats with extra toes or digits on their paws exist?

Yes. Cats with extra toes are called polydactyl cats. Sailors used to believe they gave them good luck. These cats would find their way on ships and due to the extra toes they had added balance in stormy weather. They were also considered to be better mouser.

People in Europe years ago it is said they considered them witches and thereby destroyed. They are also called Hemingway cats because a ships captain gave Ernest aHemingway, the author his first polydactyl cat he named Snowball . Today nearly 50 of Snowball’s defendants still live at the Hemingway mansion in key West, Florida due to unrestrained breeding.

Yes, cats with extra toes, known as polydactyl cats, do exist! These cats can have one or more additional toes on their paws, often leading to a total of six or even seven toes on a single paw. Polydactylism is a genetic trait and is more common in certain breeds, such as Maine Coons. These extra toes can give them a unique appearance and may even enhance their climbing abilities!

Do all polydactyl cats have extra toes?

Well, since the definition of polydactyl is literally “the condition of having more than the ordinary number of fingers and/or toes” the answer is YES. Incidentally, where I live in west central Texas, there are a good number of ferals sporting extra toes. I care for a bunch of ferals, and I currently have a male tabby kitten who has extra toes on all four feet, which is kinda rare. But overall, polydactyly is not a rarity in itself, and generally presents as just a coule of feet having extra toes. The record is a cat that had 28 toes.

Not all cats have just 5 toes. I ad two cats with 6 toes, double pawed, but I still loved all. My male had 6 6toes, and mommy cat had the same amount the chances are good you’ll have a double pawed kitten, though there is always the oddity too, like both parents have 6 toes, but the kitten is born with only 5 toes!

Do all polydactyl cats have six toes on each paw?

No. There is a lot of variability in polydactyl cats. My cat Spock had four normal toes on his forefeet, but both of his “thumbs” were little mini-paws, with three toes instead of one. The interesting thing about hims was that his extra toes were complete with claws and normal nerves. He could use them as a “thumb” even better than a normal cat can. When he stretched his paw out, his feet looked like he was doing the Vulcan symbol for “Live long and proper,” which is why we named him Spock.

They’re called polydactyl cats (from Greek πολύς (polys), meaning ‘many’, and δάκτυλος (daktylos), meaning ‘finger’). Polydactyl cats have extra ‘fingers’ and toes because of a genetic anomaly, the same reason that some humans have the condition. It’s not harmful to the cats (or usually to the humans). In most cases they can live perfectly normal lives.

In fact there’s a multi-generational colony of around 40 – 50 polydactyl cats in Key West, Florida called Hemingway cats named after Ernest Hemingway who lived there and kept cats. Hemingway had been given a 6-toed cat by a ship’s captain when he lived there. The cat, who Hemingway named ‘Snow White’, now has many generations of cats following her and many still live wild around the estate.

Why do cats only have four toes instead of five?

Cats are digitigrade walkers, just like dogs, they are actually walking on their toes, not their feet. Their “heel” is farther up the leg. This is part of how they can run so fast and jump so high.

On their hind legs, they have only 4 toes touching the ground, but they do have a vestigial 5th digit jsut a small bit farther up the leg, called a dewclaw, which corresponds to our pinky finger, so it’s on the outside of the leg.
Look for it and you’ll certainly find it. It’s not very far up, but it does not touch the ground when the cat stands up.

They do have all 5 toes touching the ground on their forelimbs, though, including a dewclaw that touches the ground and is not vestigial.

Note that some cat breeds might lack the hindlimb dewclaw altogether.

How many toes do domestic cats have on each paw

A cat’s two rear paws contain four toes and four claws on each toe. The rear claws are thicker, stronger and nowhere near as sharp as the front claws because they are used to help the cat push its way up the bark of trees and other vertical surfaces.

Usually five toes on each front foot, four toes on each back foot (they lack the equivalent of our big toe). However, there is a relatively common genetic condition called polydactylism, where cats have one or more extra toes on some or all of their feet. If you search for “polydactyl cats”, you’ll find plenty of pictures in case you’re curious.

A cat’s two rear paws contain four toes and four claws on each toe. The rear claws are thicker, stronger and nowhere near as sharp as the front claws because they are used to help the cat push its way up the bark of trees and other vertical surfaces. The rear claws are also used to disembowel larger prey. As such, there is no need for a fifth “dew” claw, as it would not aid the cat in any of the aforementioned functions. The front “dew” claws are used to get a better grip on tree trunks and also to help capture and hold prey, while the rear claws do the disembowelling.

All cats have four paws, unless they suffer some kind of tragic accident. Each front paw has four fingers and one thumb, which is known as a dewclaw. Her back paws each have four toes. Every finger and toe also has a claw, similar to your fingernails. The “palm” of your cat’s forelegs is called the metacarpal pad, but on the hindlegs it has a different name: metatarsal! The pads in the center of your cat’s paw are hairless, and they may even sweat when your kitty is hot or nervous.

Do all cats have toe beans? Why do some cats have them while others don’t?

Yes, all cats have toe beans, which are the soft, plump pads on the underside of their paws. The pads come in many shapes and colors, and often match the cat’s coat. The color of a cat’s toe beans is determined by the amount of melanin in their skin:

Black cats: Have black toe beans because they have a lot of melanin

White cats: Have pink toe beans because they have no melanin

Calico cats: Have multi-colored toe beans

Orange cats: Have slightly orange-toned paws

Tabby cats: Have black and pink paws

Toe beans serve many purposes, including:

Cushioning

The pads protect a cat’s bones and joints while they play and explore, and they absorb impact when a cat lands from a jump

Sweating

Cats don’t have pores, so they sweat through their toe beans and paw pads to regulate their body temperature

Claw protection

The toe beans act as a protective “home” for a cat’s claws, allowing them to retract into the paw pads for safekeeping

Conclusion

How many cats have five toes instead of the normal number of four toes per foot? What causes this condition to occur in cats (and other animals)?

Check your cat. Normally 5 toes on front paws, 4 on rear. A cat like this is considered normal.

Some cats may have extra toes. They are called polydactyl. My late Sasha was polydactyl on one foot. She knew it and she never liked that extra claw … never wanted me to see that foot.

A cat typically has four paws. Each paw has five toes on the front paws and four on the back paws, making a total of 18 toes. Cats use their paws for walking, climbing, and hunting, and they often have retractable claws for grasping and climbing.

Most cats have 5 toes, 4 ‘fingers’ so to speak and 1 dewclaw on the front paws and 4 toes on the rear paws. Some cats are born with 6 toes on the front paws, (polydactyl) while this isn’t exactly rare it still is not all that common.

I have never heard of a cat, any cat breed, having 20 toes on 1 paw let alone each paw.
